Split Hazel Basketry

Sat 17 - Sun 18 Oct

£240.00

Split hazel basketry is an endangered craft in the UK, currently only practiced by a handful of people. Flo is an experienced basket weaver and has taught this style of basket around the country.

There is a long tradition of hazel basket making in England and all over Europe, a very old, cottage craft. As hazel grows prolifically across many areas of the continent, it was used a lot, to make agricultural baskets that were made for function. The whisket, a frame basket originally made in the Welsh borders is a beautiful example of one of these functional baskets made from splitting, carving and bending hazel into a usable and beautiful basket.

During the course you will learn some traditional basketry techniques and make a ‘whisket’.

On day 1 we’ll be selecting out hazel rods and bending, splitting and carving them to create our weaving material. Then day two will be all about weaving!

Suitable for beginners, we will be using some hand tools, such as knives and saws. It is advised to wear suitable clothes for outdoor work, especially strong trousers. If you have any knee issues or issues with your hands, please let us know prior to booking so we can discuss the suitability of the course, for you.

Full payment for each course is required when booking (please do contact us if this is a problem).  You can change the date or cancel your place up to 30 days before the course starts but there is a £25 charge. The full course fee is non-refundable after this time, however we will always try to fill the cancelled place. If we can fill your place, we are of course happy to transfer you to another course.

Please note there are no dogs allowed on site and while we give you full safety briefings all courses are attended at your own risk.

All courses are for 18 years and over.
